Franny Haight, She’s All Ears, 2023, Italgio Print, 13” x 15”

“She’s All Ears” is a play on the metaphor “I’m all ears”, which means to be eager and ready to listen. However, in this work, the phrase is being manipulated to reflect intrusive thoughts or feelings of self-doubt. Written in the speech bubbles are phrases that echo the internalized pressures and expectations regarding how one "should" lead their life.

The composition of the work is meant to enhance its message. The sharp edges of the text bubbles reflect a sense of urgency and hostility directed toward the central figure. Her blank expression indicates that the messages she is being surrounded by are familiar and frequent.

The swirling background serves a dual purpose, referencing both the anatomy of the inner ear and the concept of spiraling out of control. While the stylistic choice nods to the playful aesthetic of cartoons, the underlying message and execution reflect a heavier mood common to feelings of anxiety or depression.
